Far from Home

The current state of uprootedness all over the world, with entire ethnic populations forced from their homelands, fleeing political upheaval, genocide or famine means new exiles and immigrants arriving in the Bay Area daily, all experiencing cultural displacement. Move back one or two generations and the same experience is common in the families of most of us who were born in America. Far From Home examines that transitional experience of one culture rubbing up against another within an individual’s life, and it shows us how one person, or her descendants might express that experience. In the series, we have exhibited work by artists born in the Philippines, Iran, Hungary, Taiwan, Colombia, and Mexico, as well as artists whose parents or grandparents were born in China, Mexico, Germany and Sweden.
