I fabricate mixed media sculpture using recycled materials, creating psuedo museum installations, that investigate science and technology and how it effects our everyday lives.
Half the fun of creating art using recycled materials is the "hunting and gathering period". When I was a child I would go with my father to his manufacturing plant and pick up small pieces of metal that were left on the ground from the large fabrication machines. The hunting grounds have expanded to flea markets and garage sales where ‘cultural cast-offs’ can be reborn into mixed media sculpture that comments on all phases of modern life. On the outside, the sculptures appear to be light-hearted, but there is always a deeper message within.
The last several years I have been working on “The Museum of Curious Thought.” It examines the dichotomy between the “natural” world, and the questionable scientific research, which could lead to irreversible consequences. Two examples are cloning and genetic engineering. These advancements in technology threaten our environment and our well being.
It is impossible to keep up with the current technological breakthroughs and discoveries, so we are caught unaware and unprepared for the outcome.
