Painting for me is a form of archaeology, an exploration into the inner world of the psyche. Where will each piece lead me? What will be uncovered/revealed?
Random mark-making, usually with charcoal or graphite, is the first step in my paintings and drawings. After paint has been added, abstract and figurative shapes that suggest bodies, faces, houses, etc., begin to emerge and a story, specific to each work, evolves. Many of those marks can be seen in the finished piece, as a way to keep the original graphic energy intact.
