My artwork nearly always begins with the grid; I draw the small squares over the whole canvas or sheet of paper and then methodically fill in or outline each square. Sometimes I put a triangle in the corners, as anchors perhaps. Thus the work has a foundation set and then the business of filling in the squares begins.
I find the simple task of addressing each square, one at a time, to be meditative and satisfying. The form of the day slips away as I focus on the developing color and texture of the square.
When finished the work has a calming and tranquil presence. More and more the works seem to be in the color blue, the color of “spirit” I think. I’ve titled a lot of the works “Prayers”, for they are dedicated to the healing of the fragile planet we live on and I’m calling on the Spirit within all of us to create those changes we need to make to be healthy, happy and peaceful.
