Ampersand, collage of bookpapers, ephemera, found objects, 16" x 20"

Whiffle Tree, collage of bookpapers, ephemera, found objects, 16" x 20"

I am a retired business person with no formal training in the arts, but a great appreciation for them. Recently I started making collages using old books and ephemera.

A collector/forager at heart, I enjoy the hunt for materials: at estate sales, flea markets and the street. I start by laying out the basic framework of the piece using old book covers which I often de-laminate to reveal interesting patterns, textures and edges.  I then try to add interest with various two and three dimensional elements.

I very much enjoy collecting bits and pieces of this and that for my work, and I hope the work stimulates viewers to go on their own journey of discovery to identify the various elements I have used.  In this way, perhaps the viewer can, by visually disassembling the piece, have something of the same experience I have in putting it together.

In addition to Gallery Route One shows (September 2007, January 2008, September 2008, December 2008), my work has been shown at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art and the Sebastopol Center for the Arts.
